Home Solar Energy Experiment

Solar versus Home Electic Usage - Who wins?

Most homeowners go solar because they want to watch their smart meter spin backwards. This homeowner decided to see how much juice his home could consume at peak solar production time in order to make his smart meter spin forward.

So how much juice does it take to overwhelm a 4KW home solar system?  Watch this video and find out!

If you're like me, you're getting pretty frustrated by all of the misleading sales pitches, wonky financing, and shoddy installations becoming commonplace in our industry. I've gotten so frustrated by what I've personally witnessed (read cleaning up after shoddy installers - and what my friends and family's describe as a relentless onslaught of door knockers and robo-dialers) that I was inspired to write the book Divorcing The Electric Company as an insider account of an industry still trying to find itself and as a primer for those looking into solar for their families.
The intent of this book is to help consumers find you, the solid reputable solar integrators, rather than be lured in by fleeting cash back offers, free ipads, and other shiny trinkets that have become the baited hook of those rushing into solar to make a quick buck.
As a standup solar salesperson, you may want to learn what the army of 'fly by nighters' have up their collective sleeve when it comes to stealing your customers. The book covers many common 'tricks of the trade' and other sales deceptions that are often used to lock unsuspecting prospects into long term contracts they don't really understand. As a salesmanager, you may wish to use this book to educate your sales teams and customers and to build credibility for your company through the spirit of full disclosure and consultative selling.
Set up in the spirit of a legal divorce proceeding, Divorcing the Electric Company begins by taking would be solar consumers through the process of Discovery. This chapter covers the ins and outs of selecting the right solar equipment, hiring a qualified solar contractor, and finally, deciding on the best financing solution to pay for it all.
From there, the book goes on to take consumers through the process of filing for the divorce, dealing with separation from the utility, division of property (who owns what under which circumstances), child custody (the care and feeding of a solar array), the appeal (all the new fangled ways the electric company is looking to remarry solar customers), relocations (selling a home with solar), and so on ending with a glossary of solar terms for customers to use as a reference.
With hundreds of books sold in the initial launch and more distributed everyday, you're bound to start bumping into readers sooner or later. While the book is decidedly pro-customer, it can be used by solar salespeople to gain customers' confidence and guide them to a positive solar outcome that will ultimately bolster our industry's reputation, else or, we keep going down our current path and end up, dare I say it, like vinyl siding...
I apologize if I sound dire, but from what I'm witnessing first hand, hearing about from friends, family, and acquaintences (you're in solar? Stop calling me!), and seeing in media outlets and through online review sites, if you're not worried, you're either not paying attention or, well, do I really need to say it?
